Purpose: To study the early follow-up results of the metal-on-metal articulation total hip arthroplasty with use of large femoral head.
Materials and Methods: 29 patients (31 hips) were follow up for more than 14 months after primary total hip arthroplasty using a metal-on-metal articulation with large femoral head. Average was 41 years old (range, 29~63). We checked the functional status and radiologic finding.
Results: The average harris hip score improved from 54.4 points preoperatively to 93.5 points at the final follow up (P<0.05). All cases have s stable fixation and no evidence of osteolysis, acetabular cup loosening in radiologic finding. There was no evidence of post operative deep infection and dislocation, but one hip underwent intra-operative periprostetic fracture in around femoral stem.
Conclusions: Short term follow up of metal-on-metal articulation total hip arthroplasty with use of large femoral head show a satisfactory result, but it needs a analysis for long term follow up results.
